This week… 9-15 November

Izzy had her first ever parents evening. According to her teacher she has settled in lovely at school and is always enthusiastic about everything! The best bit was looking through some of her workbooks, such as the ‘Weekend News’ were she draws a picture every Monday to explain what she has done over the weekend. It’s funny to see what kind of things are really big news to her – like going for a walk and finding a conker, or going swimming in the big pool. I know she has only been there for a couple of months but its reassuring to know that she has settled in well and is trying her best. She is so determined to be ‘Learner of the week’ and is always a little disappointed when the accolade goes to one of her classmates (although not jealous, just determined to try even harder, which is nice!) and she is never prouder than when she gets a sticker – whether its for eating all her lunch or doing really well at reading.

Father’s Day
Izzy chose Daddy’s present herself. She asked me if I would buy her a pirate game and when I said no, she tried the old “You know, Daddy would really like this for Father’s Day.” And it worked. After all, I thought it was nice for her to pick her own present for Daddy. Even if she really picked it for herself. They had fun playing the game together though, and she also made some lovely cards at school. Clara bought him the TFI Friday CD and I was really pleased when nursery helped her make a card with her little hand prints on.

Happy First Birthday

We celebrated Clara’s first birthday yesterday. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since she joined our family – yet in other ways it feels like she has always been part of our lives.

How to Make: A Sandcastle Cake

A friend and I made this sandcastle cake for a surprise 30th birthday party. We were both pretty impressed with how it turned out so I thought I would share how to make it. Blogging about it was a bit of an afterthought though so apologies for the lack of ‘in progress’ photos!

The good thing about this cake is that it doesn’t need to look perfect and completely symmetrical. You can use whatever size and shape cake tins you have, and your castle can be as adventurous and as detailed – or as simple – as you like.
