I don’t know about you, but I am always in such a rush in the mornings to get everyone ready and out of the house for nursery, school and work. I often don’t have time to make breakfast for myself, especially as the kids eat out of the house, but I also don’t function well without something to eat early on.

Smoothies or yoghurt drinks could be a useful solution as they can be grabbed from the fridge on the way out of the house and consumed on the go or once you get to work.

We were sent some samples of Lifeway Kefir to try out in return for an honest review. Lifeway Kefir is a live and active cultured milk smoothie drink, a bit like a drinkable yoghurt. You can drink it on it’s own, enjoy it over cereal or fruit, or add to fruit smoothies – and it comes in different flavours including original, mango, blueberry and strawberry.

So what does it actually taste like? Well its described as a smoothie, but its more yoghurt-like, thinner in consistency and has a more tangy taste to it rather than thick, sweet fruit smoothies. It’s quite filling – the samples I tried are half the size of the full 500ml bottles and I thought that was quite enough for a portion, especially if you are mixing it with something else like fruit or cereal.

The strawberry one was my favourite, I just tried that on its own as a drink but it would work well poured over some mixed berries as a snack or quick breakfast. The original flavour tastes just like plain natural yoghurt, so you might want to sweeten that with fruit or have it over cereal.

If you have more time you can get a bit more creative – the Lifeway Kefir website has some ideas, including one for a chocolate smoothie bowl; I didn’t have all the ingredients in to make this but a good alternative would be to mix the original flavour with a couple of teaspoons of cocoa powder and top with some raspberries and crushed meringue to make a tasty yet relatively healthy dessert.

What are the benefits of Lifeway Kefir?

  • It’s high in protein, calcium and vitamin D.
  • It can help with digestion and increased immunity. It also contains ingredients that help improve your skin and even help your mood by raising serotonin levels.
  • Lifeway Kefir is 99% lactose free and contains no preservatives or artificial additives. It is naturally gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians.
  • It’s like yoghurt, but it has more protein and more probiotics. Probiotics help to balance the bacteria in the digestive system, which can be adversely affected by everyday stress including infections, alcohol, antibiotics, travel and poor diet.

Lifeway Kefir is available to buy in Booths supermarkets in 500ml bottles. For more information, visit www.lifewayfoods.co.uk.
